The first meeting of the Adopt A Patient Foundation and Kids Need Us Now was Friday March 30th, 2001. Thirty five people came to a Lecture on ADD and ADHD. All the parents and children became a part of the Documentary and have started on the program.April 28th we held a picnic. Master Chef, Scott Lane, gave a cooking demonstration and all enjoyed the tasty food. The children enjoyed riding horses and the wide open spaces of the country.
We met at the Windsor Farm and the children had fun riding horses, running through the fields and enjoying wonderful balanced food. You cannot say that children will not eat good food. They all filled their plates and came back for more.
Whenever anyone talks about lifestyle changes, everyone seems to panic. However, it is our experience that if you work with the foods one likes and just make simple changes to help keep the body balanced, it is a win--win situation for all.
The one who prepares meals for the family, whether in the home or in a restaurant, becomes the pharmacist of the family. We can eat ourselves to good health or we can eat ourselves to disease. It is up to us to decide which it will be. Something as simple a slivered chicken can became a delicious meal or snack if prepared with tasty spices. Using sauces helps children try foods they usually will not touch. For example, cut chicken into small pieces, roll in one egg white, then roll in a bowl of ground up nuts and fry. Chicken fingers take on a new flavor and are much healthier than those bought in the stores. A healthy snack in a very short period of time. Being healthy also means taking time to smell the roses. It is important that children get the opportunity to be involved with nature and animals to allow their creativity abound. Children who have no chance to run and play freely become more stressed and less able to cope with everyday events.
t is so interesting to watch children when they have a chance to explore in the country. They begin to do very interesting and fun things that excites their imagination. Adults too can enjoy the break from the bustle of the city and have time to really discuss the important things in life. In our hectic schedules we sometimes think that we don't have time to cook healthy meals. However, most people think healthy is a five course gourmet meal. These parents are finding out that making exciting meals can be fun, easy and done in a very short period of time.
t is also fun to see adults enjoy nature. Animals teach us a great deal if we allow their intelligence to guide us.
At the end of the project Dr. Barry Sears came to meet the group and congratulate them on their hard work. It's not easy for parents to take time to change their life style but the rewards were great as those who participated in the project had great results. The real test is not the few months but if the families will continue to commit to a healthy lifestye for the entire family to be successful, happy and healthy.
